The Penith Library

The Penith Library is one of the oldest surviving structures in Ollquenford. It was designed by the engineer Sabine Lorosttal and completed in 1866. The structure stands 23 metres tall.

Sabine Lorosttal drew up the plans after a public subscription raised funds for the project. Construction took three seasons, using stone quarried a few miles inland. When it opened in 1866, local newspapers described it as the most ambitious public work the town had attempted.

The Penith Library was restored in the late twentieth century and remains a familiar landmark for residents and visitors.
